‘That which in itself has the highest use, possesses the greatest beauty’:  So said the Shakers, who knew a great deal about both, and whose principles of simplicity, quality and utility in design, have inspired bespoke cupboardmakers, Plain English, to create The Williamsburg Kitchen.

Made using Maple, one of the materials of choice in Shaker furniture design, The Williamsburg Kitchen features other traditional Shaker details such as pillow-fronted drawers, that are dovetailed at the front and back, wooden peg rails, and hand-spun wooden knobs.

Whilst there are many Shaker-style kitchens on the market, Creative Director of Plain English, Katie Fontana, was keen to thoroughly research, and mirror, the joinery techniques used by North American Shaker communities:

“The care and attention to detail the Shakers devoted to their work reinforced our aim not to compromise on quality. We decided to forego modern gadgetry and simply rely on joinery methods that have withstood the test of time” (Katie Fontana)

Inspired by the common Shaker practice of hanging up chairs and other household items whilst cleaning, Katie has also designed wall cupboards that can be “hung” off of a traditional shaker peg rail as a quirky feature.

Bespoke kitchens by Plain English start from £40,000. Visit their Suffolk showroom to see The Williamsburg Kitchen, or go to to see the company’s portfolio of work.
