What is depression?

Depression is a common mental disorder that is characterized by sadness, loss of excitement, interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-esteem, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy and poor concentration. These problems can be challenging at best and devastating at worst.

If these problems occur frequently or become chronic, they can substantially impair one's ability to cope with dally life. The most severe of depression can lead to suicide. Most cases of depression can be treated.

What are the reasons for depression?

Causes of depression can be single or multiple. In most cases, depression results from a mix of things that can be current circumstances, events of the past, genes, and other factors.

Studies show, women are twice as likely as men to become depressed. People who are elderly are also at a higher risk of depression, and living alone can add to the risk. Sometimes, health conditions such as cancer, heart diseases, thyroid problems, chronic pain and many others lead to depression. Trauma and grief - physical or mental abuse can also trigger depression. Life changing events can be stressful and trigger depression. Many people become depressed during a divorce, or while getting married.  Even prescription drugs can cause depression.

Some people don't know as to why they become depressed and some people are clear about the reason for depression. It is truly important for people to understand that depression is a disease that can affect anyone, and can be treated.
