For some members of the Jewish community, if it's not in a synagogue, then it's simply not a worship service. But this year, Congregation Sim Shalom, led by Rabbi Steven Blane will hold its High Holiday Services at a world famous jazz club in New York City on September 17 and September 26, 2012.

In these enlightened times, it's appropriate to understand that each person experiences prayer in their own way. Some feel closest to prayer in nature, others in the expression of music. Jazz music is closely related to traditional Jewish music in its improvisational style.

The liberal Jewish community often finds it difficult to connect with traditional Jewish worship. Weekly Services in general and High Holiday services in particular often tend to feel sullen and worse, boring. Also, the High Holiday theme of repentance also weighs heavily on the minds of attendees.

Instead of going to a traditional Synagogue these High Holidays, why not visit a place which offers a new style of High Holiday Jewish Worship. One which allows us to enjoy the traditional High Holiday melodies arranged for a Jazz Trio, interspersed with brief explanations of the significance of each piece and its liturgy. This will be a new style of Jewish Jazz combined with the melodies that inspire our faith and traditions.

Interestingly, the High Holidays are known by several names in the Torah. Rosh Hashana (the Head of the Year) is also referred to as Yom T'ruah (a day of sounding the shofar). In rabbinic literature, the Mishna, it is referred to as Yom Hadin (a day of judgement).

As according to Jewish tradition, the shofar will be sounded 100 times during Sim Shalom's Jazz Service at Small's in NYC!

Yom Kippur- the Day of Atonement- is a day of fasting and contemplation. It is written in the Torah, on the tenth day of the seventh month, God said that the people must not work in order to cleanse and atone for their sins. While listening to the often haunting and deeply spiritual melodies played by the Jazz trio and chanted by Rabbi Blane, you will be given an opportunity to touch the depths of your soul and begin the journey to spiritual renewal.
