 Summary

The value of the Polish telecommunications market in 2009 amounted to approx. PLN 48.6bn, estimated the Electronic Communications Office (UKE). According to various market sources, as well as opinions of companies and analysts, in 2010, its value probably shrank due to the declining value of the fixed-line segment, as well as to strong competition in the mobile segment and some decisions of the regulator. http://www.bharatbook.com/market-research-reports/mobile-and-telecoms-market-research-report/intellinews-polish-telecommunications-report.html

Tehe Polish telco market, however, looks generally healthy. The year 2011 can be crucial for its future shape, as companies and the regulator will have to decide on the manner in which they use new technologies available. From the very beginning of 2011, first players will start offering services using the LTE technology. High costs of building and maintaining infrastructure required by the LTE technology, as well as growing demand for data capacity in networks will probably require new alliances between operators and a new approach from the UKE. The first step has already made by Telekomunikacja Polska (the owner of Orange network operator) and PTC (Era). Both companies intend to establish a joint-venture firm, which will operate their LTE network. TPSA and P4 (the operator of Play, the fourth Polish mobile network) can also start together in tender for new frequencies. market research

The end of 2010 brought about a wave of news concerning market consolidation. Current shareholders of Polkomtel (the operator of Plus network) are closer to multibillion sale of this company.

Meanwhile, Polkomtel itself is buying other firms, while Poland’s number-one cable TV provider UPC is buying the number-four player. In another mega-deal, listed sat TV operator Cyfrowy Polsat is buying terrestrial TV broadcaster Polsat, thus creating the biggest Polish media group. Still, all these deals can be considered only the "phase one" of the big consolidation tsunami.
