11 July,2012- London: Inspired by the galley cupboards on a 1946 racing yacht from the world-renowned designers, Sparkman and Stephens, Plain English’s Southwold Kitchens in London will sit as comfortably in a little beach hut by the sea as it will in a large, contemporary urban space.

The hand painted range has its roots in Gweek boatyard in Cornwall where Plain English’s Creative Director and co-founder, Katie Fontana, winters her boat.  In the autumn of 2003 the exquisite 52’ Comet came into Gweek for a refit – the timing couldn’t have been more fortuitous.

After an inspirational visit to the San Francisco Maritime Museum some years earlier, Katie had been thinking about using yacht interiors for a new bespoke kitchen range.  But it wasn’t until she saw Comet’s discarded cupboards on the quayside at Gweek and had had a look at their unusual detailing, that she knew she’d found exactly what she’d been looking for.

“When I design joinery, it’s the smallest design details that interest me the most. I loved the vertical slots on Comet’s doors because her designers had used a practical boat device (ventilation slots are common features on boat cupboards where good air circulation is needed to prevent wood from rotting) and turned it into something beautiful and decorative.”

The Southwold kitchen was named after the quintessentially English seaside town of Southwold in Suffolk where beach huts, sailing boats and the long, shingle beach are highlights of this picture postcard setting.
