Stem Cell Bill Going to Senate Floor for Vote

18-Mar-2011 | News-Press Release

Issue:  Each year, between $10 and $25 million of your state tax dollars are spent on stem cell research.  Since the research is funded by the state, a condition of receiving money is that annually the grant recipients must present their research to the public.  But the annual symposium is held at costly facilities, and the price of admission last year was $100.  For the average citizen, this admission charge is too expensive and prevents taxpayers from attending the symposium, whose stated purpose is to present research to the general public.

Senate Bill 731, as amended, will prohibit the Stem Cell Commission from charging residents more than a minimal admission fee to attend an annual Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund Symposium.  The amended bill has passed the Senate Finance Committee and will soon be considered by the full Senate.

Action:  Please click the blue "Take Action!" link near the top right corner of the page or click here now.  Urge your senator to support SB 731 and make the stem cell research symposium affordable to all residents.  Thank you for your support.
