Driving Data Center Efficiency and Environmental Sustainability at Microsoft

Datacenters have captured the attention of the computing industry over the last few years, fueled mainly by the tremendous growth in cloud computing. Microsoft has taken a holistic approach to datacenter efficiency, challenging convention and identifying innovative ways to increase efficiency. Microsoft’s Datacenter Services team is working to reduce water and power consumption, carbon wastes, and construction time to increase our right-time-to-market cloud computing scale and efficiency while driving IT innovations in the industry.

This presentation covers the top drivers of datacenter total cost of ownership (TCO) and return on investment (ROI), how Microsoft “right-sizes” servers and optimizes power and performance, how Microsoft operates its datacenters with the goal of maximizing efficiency and minimizing environmental impact, discusses the challenges with traditional datacenter designs, and Microsoft’s modular datacenter strategy.

Efficiencies through Cloud Computing: A Cloud Computing and Windows Azure Overview

There have only been a handful of technological advances in the history of IT that have the potential to impact Green IT initiatives as much as cloud computing.  With the ability to dynamically grow and shrink server count, a Platform as a Service has the potential to dramatically change how developers approach building, deploying and managing applications.

In this session, we’ll briefly explore what cloud computing is, the various models of cloud computing as well as the many ways those models can be deployed.  We’ll then spend a majority of the time focusing on the Windows Azure platform, which is Microsoft’s platform as a service. Windows Azure provides developers an internet-scale cloud computing environment which enables you to focus on building great applications, and not worry about such things as managing the infrastructure and OS that your applications depend on.  We’ll look at the platform as a whole as well as the many services that make up the platform such as compute and storage, as well as the ability to create secure Hybrid clouds.
