Awards Program Seeks Hospitals With A Special Ingredient
08-Apr-2011 | News-Press Release
ATLANTA GA (April 7, 2011) -- In February 2011, ten hospital-sponsored services were named programs of excellence through the Hospital Charitable Service Awards, a national program sponsored by Jackson Healthcare. What made these programs standout, according to awards chairman, Charles R. Evans, FACHE, was their unique impact on the lives of those in the communities they serve.
“The special ingredient we are looking for through this awards program are hospital-sponsored charitable initiatives that improve a community in a measurable way,” said Evans. Hospital programs historically provide outstanding charitable service in their community, and a community of results-oriented hospital programs is emerging that apply evidence-based best practices and data-driven decision making to their charitable activities.
All hospital-sponsored programs are eligible to participate regardless of their size or ownership model. Each hospital program nominee is evaluated by an independent board of hospital executives based upon five criteria: community impact, innovation, collaboration, transferability and best practice. Award recipients share a prize pool of $100,000.
What makes the Hospital Charitable Service Awards unique, according to Evans, is its emphasis on specific charitable programs, rather than the hospital. “This allows the many community organizations that support each program to share in the accolades as well,” said Evans.
In March 2011, Jackson Healthcare published an eBook titled, Community Change Agents: 10 Hospital Programs Changing the Way Communities Are Served. This eBook shares the stories of the ten award-winning programs and ideas on how other hospitals can follow their lead.
Nominations for this year’s awards program are now being accepted at www.hospitalcharitableserviceawards.org. Deadline for submission is Friday, October 14, 2011.

About the Hospital Charitable Service Awards
The Hospital Charitable Service Awards is a national program sponsored by Jackson Healthcare. It recognizes hospitals whose commitment to their community – whether defined locally, regionally, nationally or globally – goes beyond “community benefit” and “free care” and has led to innovative efforts to improve community health and increase access to healthcare education and services.
All hospital-funded charitable programs are eligible to participate regardless of the size, tax or ownership model. A national charitable services conference was scheduled in Atlanta, Georgia on February 3, 2011 to bring together individuals and hospitals in an effort to explore evidence-based approaches to community benefit and charitable services.
