Adequate Switch Gear Maintenance Lighting Up Africa

30-Jan-2012 | News-Press Release

South Africa is blessed because our electricity costs are amongst the lowest in the world. This has also made us a leader in electricity supply in Africa as we supply power to many neighbouring countries. Because of this Eskom has implemented plans that include spending about R343-billion over 5 years to build new power stations, with the first due for completion in 2013. Eskom has started work on two new coal-fired power stations and is considering bids from two overseas companies to build a nuclear power station. Maintenance of these power stations is going to be so important. Switch gear maintenance and transformer oil purification is vital for the preservation of these plants.

South Africa uses coal as its primary energy source because it is abundantly available. Due to this, South Africa is the 14th highest emitter of greenhouse gases. The recent power crisis has made South African government and Eskom realise the need to diversify our energy sources. Moving towards alternative energy sources such as nuclear power and natural gas, solar power and various forms of renewable energy is essential for long term energy security.

Eskom plans to reopen three power stations that were disbanded in the 1990’s. The plan includes working on the country's electricity distribution structure. Eskom aims to reduce demand of electricity by at least half through a campaign which will include promoting the use of solar-powered geysers as well as liquid petroleum gas for cooking. Also, Eskom has vowed to improve maintenance on power stations such as transformer services which is said to prevent future energy disruptions in South Africa.

Electricity is essential and without it we could not turn on our computers or light up our homes. However, electricity needs to be respected in two ways. Firstly, do not abuse electricity. Secondly, use it safely. If electricity is not used properly it can be dangerous and can kill you. Make sure that you and your family know how to work with electricity safely and efficiently because this will help everyone.
