Marwah Studios joins hands with Short and Sweet Theatre Festival

16-Nov-2011 | News-Press Release

The world’s largest ten-minute play festival in the world, Short+Sweet, returns to Delhi on 16-26 November, after it’s tremendously successful debut last year.  On its arrival, it joined hands with Marwah Studios to interact with national media about the event.

According to President Mr Sandeep Marwah, the students of three schools of Marwah Studios, AAFT, ASMS and ABS have been engaged in writing performing and staging plays under the banner Asian School of performing Arts. Short+Sweet provides audiences with fast and fresh entertainment – the theatrical equivalent of Twenty20 cricket.  Marwah Studios will be promoting this event through Radio Noida and other channels like Asian News Agency.

Festival Director, Australian Alex Broun, says the festival last year provided all the proof he needed that Indian audiences are just like others elsewhere in the modern time-starved world.  “They don’t want to waste their precious relaxation time.  They want to be entertained every minute, and they like variety.” Writers of 10-minute theatre know they can’t afford to waste a moment on stage. Every word and gesture has to earn its keep.  “Unlike some traditional theatre, 10-minute plays don’t ever let go of the audience” says Broun, himself probably the world’s most performed 10-minute playwright.

If audiences love Short+Sweet, participants cannot get enough.  “We had around 25 plays at last year’s festival, but this year we had such a strong response we had to cap it at 40”, said Executive Producer for Short+Sweet, Michael Wood.  “We get everybody – professional practitioners at the peak of their careers, and thrilling new talent just waiting for their chance.”

Excitingly this year, Short+Sweet will add its hugely popular Wildcard programme to the festival.  Says Broun “Wildcards provide the fountain of new talent which Short+Sweet is famous for finding and nurturing.  Wildcards allow talented people to branch into theatre in a way they could rarely do with full-length theatre.”

Short+Sweet will play at Epicentre in Gurgaon (16-18 November) and at the Habitat Centre (22-24 November), with the Gala Final at Habitat on 26 November.  The Wildcard programmes will be presented at Azad Bhavan at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations on 19 and 20 November.
