LinkedIn members confirm CareerSaver's beliefs

IT Pros-Get Trained!

If you are in the IT industry, chances are you have heard of the leader in adaptive learning-Interactive Study Systems / CareerSaver.com. With the economy slowly beginning to recover, CareerSaver wanted to know if IT certifications were still recognized as a valuable commodity in helping one secure a job and advance in said job.

Frederick Dietz, Director of Business Development for ISS / CareerSaver, turned to LinkedIn’s IT members to discover whether the beliefs of those within the IT industry coincided with Careersaver’s.  The diversity of professions available on LinkedIn offered access to Microsoft, Cisco, CompTia IT professionals and more. Dietz posed the following question,” Certifications: Valuable or Not? As someone directly involved in the creation and delivery of IT continuing education and certification training I would be VERY interested in hearing the thoughts of the community re certifications. Please address their value if one is employed vs. unemployed and looking.”

The response was overwhelming and the comments verified CareerSaver’s longstanding message regarding continuing education and certification in the IT arena. While it was agreed that there is no substitute for hands on experience, certifications and continuing education are clearly a worthwhile investment in getting one’s foot in the door and keeping it there. They keep a professionals’ knowledge current while validating their skill set. Additionally they enhanced one’s job security as well as the opportunity to advance within their company.

CareerSaver also questioned whether having certifications was important to those who are currently unemployed and actively searching for employment. A variety of job seekers responded, from those just beginning their career to advanced professionals looking for a new position. All answered with a resounding “yes!”

Some actual responses from LinkedIn members;

Having a cert is extremely valuable and in most cases required to have. When employed, definitely a good way to show your boss your worth your pay and some.”

It helped distinguish me among a LOT of candidates to get my first official IT job offers, and it's been required for some positions that I've applied for.”

When unemployed, it's a good way to catch potential employer’s attention when reviewing the stack of resumes on their desk.”

More of the responses are available at www.CareerSaver.com, and the polls and comments in their entirety can be found at www.LinkedIn.com.

One professional summed it up best: Simply put, I consider certifications as an investment in an IT career. Employed or not.”
