Nigeria's Election Postponed Till Monday

03-Apr-2011 | News-Press Release

INEC chairman Professor Attahiru Jega has announced that all National Assembly elections have been postponed till Monday. This is in view of the difficulties being faced across the country in the delivery of the voting materials, particularly result sheets and ballot papers. He said the Commission believes that what is worth doing is worth doing well. He also said INEC regrets the situation apologises to Nigerians. And that INEC is fully committed to a free and fair election.

The chairman says the decision of the Commission is 'weighty' and appeals to all of Nigeria's development partners and observers.

He said all of the materials are already in the country and some have even reached the states. He said the disappointment was caused by a vendor who was supposed to deliver the materials by Thursday. According to him they did not deliver on Thursday because they said several Boeing 747's were being used for the relief efforts in "Japan and Libya" and this affected their transportation plans. They assured the materials would arrive by Friday. Aircraft were already on standby at airports to transport the materials across the country.

He said unfortunately, the materials did not arrive in Lagos until 9:00am this morning.

The chairman said he believed the materials will all get to the states before Monday.
