GLOBAL LOGISTICS & TRANSPORTATION LEADER IS LOGISTICS & TRANSPORTATION PARTNER IN BROADBAND INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT

07-Nov-2010 | News-Press Release

Bessemer, AL based Trillion Communications, Inc. headed by Atlanta resident Ralph Brown formed a public-private partnership with A2D and the South Central Alabama Broadband Commission to bring high capacity broadband capabilities to eight rural southern Alabama counties.  Butler, Conecuh, Crenshaw, Dallas, Escambia, Lowndes, Macon, and Wilcox counties are all economically challenged.

The team lead by Trillion was awarded a highly competitive grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service (RUS) for $59 million with and additional $25 million from private investors.

The project also intends to enhance public safety services by creating an interoperable network between public safety agencies in all eight counties, as well as establish the infrastructure necessary to support a future 700 MHz wireless interoperable public safety broadband network.

Other components of the project include:

- Construction of over 2,200 miles of new fiber, complemented by an existing fiber network, to offer a variety of wholesale services at speeds up to 1 Gbps and transport services at speeds up to 10 Gbps.

 - Facilitate new or improved broadband service for up to nearly 72,000 households and 3,000 businesses by enabling local Internet service providers to utilize the project's open network at 45 points of interconnection.

 - Provide direct connections to approximately 400 anchor institutions, including as many as 34 public safety entities, 91 K-12 schools, four libraries, five community colleges, two additional institutions of higher education, 16 healthcare facilities, and 219 government buildings and centers.

The project will create approximately 1,500 jobs in the Alabama region.  Funding of the project is made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and was announced by Vice President Joe Biden promising to bring "jobs and economic opportunity to communities nationwide." This grant is one of 94 covering 37 states and part of 1.8 billion of a $7 billion Recovery Act initiative.

As the transportation and logistics partner, Allied will be responsible for coordinating the delivery of goods and materials required for the project.

"We are honored and humbled by our selection to participate in this project that is so important to the economic and educational future of those eight Alabama counties. Our selection also demonstrates our continued growth and visibility in the trannsportation and logistics marketplace, " stated Milton Kirby, president, Allied Logistics.
